The Gospel Jubilee Singers Biography

The Gospel Jubilee Singers are a Third Generation group consisting of Reverend Johnnie Holloway, Michael Holloway, Andre Curtis, Sean Holloway, Joel Holloway and Clifton Baker, Jr.  The Gospel Jubilee Singers were formed in 1943 by Edward Holloway, Dorothy Holloway Curtis, Enoch Scarborough, Joseph Scarborough and George Holloway.   They traveled up and down the road until their jobs and family became priority.  That’s when they decided to get their children involved in the ministry.   In 1954, ten-year-old Johnnie Holloway joined as the youngest member singing alongside his brothers and cousins.   They started singing on a local radio station and were invited to numerous singing events.   Johnnie, with Sam Cooke like vocals eventually became the lead singer.

The group has toured the United States extensively and has traveled abroad touring many countries in Europe.  This has allowed The Gospel Jubilee Singers to perform alongside most of the mainstream gospel artists.  The group is known for writing its own music and be able to perform all styles of Gospel Music.  One of the group's songs “L-O-V-E“ was used for the United Negro College Fund. While this group is proud of their accomplishments, writing, and performing they mostly want people to know that THEY LOVE GOD and their music is a true ministry to God!

In 2003 The Gospel Jubilee Singers signed with Son Sound Platinum Records, located in Bessemer City North Carolina, and later recorded their newest release entitled “Consecrated”.  In the early part of 2007 the group left Son Sound Platinum Records and became part of the First Lite Records family of artist.  Their “Consecrated” project will be nationally released in July 2007.

The “Consecrated” release will give a new meaning to quartet style music.  Not many artists can record a project with not only traditional quartet style music but add praise & worship, southern rock and contemporary to the mix.  Well not only did The Gospel Jubilee Singers do it, they did it with excellence.  “More & More” will have you raising your hands to praise God while you’ll find yourself moving to the flow of “Jesus Can Do Anything”.  “The Storm Is Over” has a smoother and mellower quality with a meaningful message.  “Send Me I’ll Go” and “Call Him Up” have an added southern rock flavor.  “Somebody Knew” is more of a praise and worship song done southern style.  All quartet fans are sure to love the more traditional feel to “Never Failed Me”, “Praise Him” and “Lord I Love You”.   “L-O-V-E” is a traditional song with a hint of R&B style.   Rounding this CD out is two songs that are sure to take the gospel industry by storm.   “I Don’t Know Why”, written by Andrae’ Crouch, is done acappella while “Sanctuary” is accompanied by a beautiful Spanish guitar.  Both songs show the true vocal talent to the Gospel Jubilee Singers with an unmatched harmony.

Johnnie Holloway

With a voice akin to Sam Cooke and one that transcends ages, Johnnie Holloway is one to be recognized.  Although animated in his performances, he his refreshingly humble.  If you asked him, he would rather call what he does “ministry”.  Johnnie is from Raleigh, NC and married with eight children.  Ordained into the ministry in 1983 and a former pastor lends itself well to shepherding souls.

Johnnie joined The Gospel Jubilees at the age of ten.  He was called little Johnnie then but is now known as Pops in the group.  He later became the lead vocalist.  Their latest release “Consecrated” has songs penned by Johnnie along with his family.  Johnnie prides himself on originality and being a member of a third generation group.  He has a great ear.  He even has used this gift to produce the recordings of various choirs and groups.

After attending college and retiring from IBM, he decided to teach.  Teaching is dear to Johnnie’s heart.  He is currently teaching in the Wake County Public School System.

Sean Holloway

As an extremely talented vocalist, guitarist and writer Sean has been mistakenly underrated in the gospel industry thus far.  However, this multi-talented artist is stepping up to show the industry that the quartet of today has a much broader range than the quartet of the past.  His abilities raise the bar considerably for other artist in the industry now and in the future.

Descending from a family of singers, musicians and preachers in Raleigh, NC, music has been his mainstay.  Sean started playing guitar in his family’s group “The Gospel Jubilee Singers” at 16 years old.  Today, he is still singing alongside his brothers, cousin and father.  He has written, sung and played guitar and bass on their newly released project “Consecrated”.

Sean has performed and or recorded with many artists.  He played guitar on Tony Terry’s latest gospel CD “Changed”.   He has even acted in the Gospel play “Family Affair” featuring Curtis Blake of Tyler Perry’s play “Diary of a Mad Black Woman”.

Sean loves recording in the studio and feeds off the crowd during live performances.  He has a varied guitar style that includes a little bit of Jazz, R&B, Country, Rock, Pop and of course Gospel.  This versatility allows him to be at home amongst many genres of music.

Sean has had the privilege of touring Europe and throughout the U.S.  He has also appeared on Bobby Jones’ Gospel Show and numerous T.V. appearances with The Gospel Jubilees.  He loves the Lord and desires to be the light on a hill for others.

Joel Holloway

Joel Holloway is the son of 2 preachers and one thing he always wanted to do was play the piano. Tim Farrar’s playing was the spark that inspired him to play.  Lessons later started with Milton Evans; teaching him church songs and a little about how to read music.  During that time the lessons were sporadic and they soon stopped because of Joel’s athletic career.  While in college, Joel discovered his passion for music.  He eventually changed his major and graduated from North Carolina Central University with a B.A. in music spawning the Joel Holloway we have today.  He is now a sought after musician, writer and producer, performing styles from R&B, Jazz to Gospel.  He has performed with: Tony Terry, Grady Tate, Cameo, YahZarah, Black Street, Erika Badu, DeWayne Woods, the renowned NCCU Jazz Ensemble and Touring choir, and many more.  Joel has had several accomplishments including but not limited to the following:

·        Played for the White House Press Banquet, for the President Bill Clinton

·        Played for White House Millennium Tour

·        Played at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland

·        Played at the Cully Jazz Festival in Cully, Switzerland

·        Played at the Vienne Jazz Festival in France

·        Recorded with several artists including: Tony Terry, Denver Wright and the Collective, and the NCCU Jazz Ensemble…

·        Performed at Carnegie Hall

·        Music Director for the Triangle GMWA Chapter

Andre Curtis

Andre Curtis (Dre’) hails from Raleigh, NC.  He is a drummer and singer for his family group The Gospel Jubilee Singers.  He played drums on their latest release “Consecrated”. Andre is proud to have met with the who’s who of the drumming world.  One thing he has learned from them is “How to groove”.

Andre does studio work and has numerous recordings to his credit.  He has toured in Europe and throughout the U.S.  He feels blessed to be singing and playing with his family. God has been so good to him that he just cannot tell it all.
